M17: A Hubble Close-Up                                                             In the Vicinity of the Cone Nebula

Below are Powerpoint files of some of my recent talks. I have picked a set of talks which illustrate the variety of work going on in my group. The talks are also pitched at a variety of levels, with target audiences ranging from incoming undergraduates to professional physicists and astronomers at a colloquium.

The complete list of all the talks I have given.

"Molecular Cloud Fragmentation: Self-Gravity, Magnetic Fields, Ambipolar Diffusion, and Nonlinear Flows", contributed talk, AAS meeting, Pasadena, CA, June 11, 2009.

"Magnetic Fields: Recent Progress and Future Tests" invited review, Early Phases of Star Formation 2008, Ringberg Castle, Germany, July 29, 2008.

"Core Formation due to Magnetic Fields, Ambipolar Diffusion, and Turbulence" invited talk, The Cosmic Agitator: Magnetic Fields in the Galaxy, Lexington, KY, March 29, 2008.

"Cores to Disks to Protostars" invited talk, Stars to Halos: The Scale Challenge, Kingston Meeting on Theoretical Astrophysics, Kingston, Canada, July 19, 2006.

A talk given to astrophysicists.

"From Clouds to Cores to Protostars and Disks: New Insights from Numerical Simulations" astronomy colloquium, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, April 13, 2006.
(Movies asj03s.avi and animation.avi are in the same directory as the .ppt file)

A talk given to astronomy researchers.

"Hungry Young Stars: A New Explanation for the FU Ori Outbursts", press conference talk, 207th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, Washington, DC, January 11, 2006.
(Movie animation.avi is in the same directory as the .ppt file)

A press conference for science reporters.

"Magnetic Fields and Protostellar Cores", invited talk, The Young Local Universe, La Thuile, Italy, March 24, 2004.

A talk given to professional astronomy researchers who study star formation.

"The Power-Law Tail in the Initial Mass Function of Stars", November 18, 2003.

A short talk given to the Astronomy Group Journal Club at UWO about a new explanation for the power-law tail in the observed mass distribution of stars.

"How Stars Form", May 3, 2003.

A short talk to prospective undergraduates at UWO about research in star formation.

"Shells, Bubbles, Worms, and Chimneys: Highlights from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey", Astronomy Seminar Michigan State University, East Lansing, October 19, 2000 and University of Western Ontario, January 18, 2001.

A talk for professional astronomers about the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey and my involvement with it. Many slides were borrowed from an excellent public talk about the CGPS by Russ Taylor (Calgary).
