  2. Overview

This course is the fourth term of the two-year introductory physics sequence. We introduce quantum mechanics, wave-particle duality, atomic physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, and the origins of the universe.

  3. Class participation

I encourage you to ask questions during the lectures. If you have a question, chances are that others do too and will benefit from hearing the answer to your question. Also, there is nothing more discouraging to an instructor than a non-responsive audience!

  5. Schedule

A week by week schedule for the entire year is available at the course website. We usually cover one chapter every two weeks. It is a good idea to peruse each chapter in advance of the lectures, and then read each section in detail after it is covered in class. The weekend is a good time to sit down and spend time reading the book. Keeping up with the reading and starting the homework assignment as soon as possible are keys to success in this course.
  6. Contact Information

The TA's are your primary contact persons outside of the lectures. A regular interaction with them takes place in the tutorial section each Friday, 11:30 am - 12:20 pm, in 215 PAB. In addition, there is a

TA office hour: Thursdays 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, 36 PAB, but sometimes at other locations, as announced.

Please take advantage of these opportunities.

My office hours: Thursdays 10:00 am - 11:00 am, Fridays 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, in 213C PAB.

If you would like to talk to me, please do so immediately after class or during my office hours. I keep a very busy schedule and I am unlikely to be helpful if you visit me at random times. If you need to set up a special meeting, please send me an email. Sending email from your UWO account guarantees that it will not be deleted as spam. You are welcome to email me with short queries about the class, but I will not be able to use email to answer detailed questions about the course material. Questions requiring detailed explanations are best asked in person.

  7. Resources

Your textbook and the associated online content are your most relevant resource. At the internet site http://www.masteringphysics.com, you can take practice quizzes and find tutorials and other activities.
